City offices will be closed on Monday June 20, 2022, in observation of Juneteenth, our nation’s second independence day.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after issuance of  the Emancipation Proclamation, the news that slavery had been abolished  and that all enslaved people had been freed was announced in Galveston,  Texas, the last state of the Confederacy that maintained institutional  slavery. Since then, “Juneteenth” has been celebrated annually on June  19 to commemorate the end of slavery in practice in the United States as  well as the contributions by African Americans to society.

The City of Sammamish, along with the Washington state and federal governments, has declared Juneteenth an official holiday. This year, Juneteenth falls on Sunday and will therefore be observed on Monday, June 20.

The City unequivocally supports efforts to address institutional  racism and strengthen diversity, equity, and inclusion in its policies  and programs. As part of this commitment, the City is in the process of  establishing a citywide diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging  (DEIB) program, which is one of the City Council’s highest priorities.  Recognition of Juneteenth demonstrates commitment to this initiative by  bringing awareness to this important day and offering time for employees  to reflect on its significance.
