On June 23, 2023, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the following statement ahead of the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson decision.

“In the year since the Supreme Court’s conservative supermajority overturned Roe v. Wade, stripping millions of Americans of the right to essential reproductive health care, we have witnessed the real-world consequences of this extreme ruling. Americans have been forced to take long, expensive journeys to access vital health services, carry unwanted pregnancies, and even faced legal repercussions for seeking care.

“This decision has had devastating consequences even in states where abortion rights are protected by law. In Washington, health care providers have seen a rise in the demand for abortion care, limiting resources and capacity for others. The impact has been particularly devastating for people of color and low-income Americans, who often lack the resources to obtain the care they require.

“I will not stop fighting until we pass federal legislation such as the Women’s Health Protection Act to enshrine reproductive freedom as a legal right and ensure that people, not politicians, are in charge of their health care decisions.”
