On September 14, 2022, artist Cheryl Smith unveiled the finished Progress Pride Flag Mosaic in the lobby of Sammamish City Hall. Members of the City Council, Arts Commission
and the community attended the unveiling of this community art piece, which will remain a permanent fixture at City Hall.
Based on the iconic rainbow flag from 1978, the Progress Pride Flag redesigned by Daniel Quasar in 2018 celebrates the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community and calls for a
more inclusive society. Supported by grant funding from the Sammamish Arts Commission, Artist Cheryl Smith began the mosaic during a Farmer’s Market in June as part of the
City’s Pride Month celebrations where over 300 people laid 1,200 pieces of glass onto a sticky mesh foundation. “When the timid approached the table, we invited them to choose
their favorite-colored glass. The small child with big eyes who marvels at the rainbow of colored tiles like a candy store. They walked away learning the flag is a symbol that
everyone in the world loves one another.” – Cheryl Smith said about her experience working with the community on this art piece.
The public is invited to view the mosaic at City Hall (801 228th Ave SE) any time during business hours.
