Representative Suzan DelBene, who has served Washington’s 1st District in the U.S. Congress since 2012, recently addressed several national policy issues on social media. DelBene, a Reed College and University of Washington graduate born in Selma, Alabama, shared her perspectives on health care policy, tax law changes affecting Social Security, and the legality of presidential tariff actions.

On July 9, 2025, DelBene criticized proposed Republican health care cuts by stating that “Taking away health care from 17 million people isn’t a ‘minutia.’ The impact of Republicans’ health care cuts will be profound: People will lose health coverage. Rural hospitals will close. Services will be cut down. Health care costs will go up.”

The following day, July 10, 2025, she responded to claims made by former President Donald Trump regarding Social Security taxes. DelBene asserted that “Trump is claiming that he repealed the tax on Social Security & that’s not true. Relief for seniors in his new law is temporary while massive tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy are here to stay.”

Later on July 10, DelBene commented on recent executive actions related to tariffs and Congressional oversight. She stated that “Trump’s tariffs aren’t legal without Congressional approval & House Dems are fighting back! Today, we filed a brief with the Court of Appeals making clear the president cannot unilaterally put these sweeping tariffs in place. We were successful in the lower courts & we’ll keep”.

Suzan DelBene has represented Washington’s 1st District since replacing Jay Inslee in 2012 and currently resides in Medina.
