Seattle University baseball lost its series finale against San Diego, 13-12, after a late comeback by the Toreros on Apr. 19. The Redhawks had a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning but could not secure the sweep as San Diego rallied for a walk-off win.
The result was significant for Seattle U as it prevented them from sweeping the series, though they still managed to win their fourth West Coast Conference (WCC) series of the season. The Redhawks now hold a record of 14-20 overall and 9-6 in conference play.
Head Coach Donny Harrel commented on the dramatic finish, saying, “Baseball surely can break your heart. Crazy ending. 1 out away with no one on and lose on a walk-off.” Despite the loss, Harrel praised his team’s offensive performance: “Very proud of our offense today chipping away after being down and getting us the lead with an opportunity to win. They scored in 13 of the last 15 innings over the past two days, so very impressive.”
Payton Knowles led Seattle U’s offense by going four-for-five at bat and driving in three runs. Royce Hale also contributed three runs batted in (RBI), while Tyler Horner and Ryder Manale each drove in two runs during Sunday’s game.
Defensively, Seattle U struggled with four errors that contributed to San Diego’s comeback. Pitcher Isaac Hallam was charged with the loss after allowing three earned runs over nearly three innings pitched. “Our four errors hurt us, especially in the middle innings, so need to get that cleaned back up,” said Harrel. “Still very proud of going on the road and winning another conference series.”
Looking ahead, Seattle U will seek to build on its offensive momentum while addressing defensive issues as it continues through WCC play.
