Seattle University baseball defeated San Diego, 11-6, on Apr. 18, led by a perfect performance at the plate from Payton Knowles. The Redhawks recorded 17 hits to the Toreros’ seven and clinched the series win.
The result is significant as it extends Seattle U’s season-best winning streak to six games and improves their overall record to 14-19. In conference play, they now hold a mark of 9-5 and have secured their fourth series win in the West Coast Conference.
Despite taking an early two-run lead in the second inning, Seattle U fell behind by four runs before mounting a comeback in the fourth. The Redhawks responded with nine unanswered runs to secure victory. Knowles finished his day going four-for-four at bat with three extra-base hits and drove in a season-high four runs. Royce Hale and Jake Beauchaine both hit home runs during the game, while Brandon Stinnett, Kenneth Rhein, and Tyler Horner each contributed RBIs.
Kale Hammer started for Seattle U but did not factor into the decision after allowing five earned runs over four-and-two-thirds innings pitched. Like Alwood (1-3) earned the win by pitching four-and-one-third scoreless innings and striking out five batters.
The Redhawks will aim for back-to-back conference series sweeps when they face San Diego again in game three of the series tomorrow. Micah Hagler is scheduled to start for Seattle U.
