Seattle University baseball will begin a three-game conference series against Saint Mary’s College on May 1, according to an April 30 announcement. The games are scheduled to take place at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga, California, with the first pitch set for Friday evening.
The matchup is significant as it marks Seattle U’s final trip to California this season. The Redhawks have played all their regular season games between Washington and California and currently hold a 4-13 record in the state.
According to the release, the Redhawks are seeking to recover from a recent sweep by Pepperdine that ended their streak of three consecutive conference series wins. The team has struggled offensively lately, hitting .216 during the Pepperdine series compared to .362 in their previous matchup against San Diego.
Head Coach Donny Harrel recently reached his 350th win with Seattle U and his 570th overall as a head coach across seven years at Lane Community College and Seattle University. Harrel said Saturday’s victory over San Diego was a milestone for him at the helm of the program.
Pitcher Travis Farrell is expected to start Friday’s game after delivering quality outings in four straight appearances, allowing just eight earned runs over his last six starts for a 2.16 earned run average across more than thirty innings pitched. Senior Blake Smith has also contributed significantly out of the bullpen with four shutout innings over two appearances last weekend and leads the team with an ERA of 4.11 from nineteen appearances this year.
Looking ahead, Seattle U aims to improve its record against Saint Mary’s, having won six out of twenty meetings since their first encounter in 2010.
