King County Sheriff Mitzi Johanknecht recently issued orders for deputies to follow prohibitions on the use of tear gas and pepper spray issued to Seattle police, Kiro 7 reported.
Johanknecht stated deputies would only make use of chemical irritants or projectiles, even if necessary, “under the circumstances outlined by the court and only initiated with my approval," Kiro 7 reported.
The original 14-day restraining order on the use of a variety of crowd-control measures, including chemical irritants, flash-bang grenades and foam-tip projectiles, came in response to a lawsuit filed by a Black Lives Matter group.
In response to the ruling granting the moratorium on the use of crowd control measures, Black Lives Matter Seattle-King County released a statement praising the measures taken.
“We take this victory and we keep fighting, we keep marching, we keep assembling to demand the seismic changes that are necessary to rid our justice system of institutional racism,” the statement read, according to Kiro 7.
