CITY OF NEWCASTLE: Newcastle Cares: Aegis Gardens, YMCA, City Partner to Help Citizens in Need

Newcastle1

City of Newcastle issued the following announcement.

NEWCASTLE CARES ESSENTIALS DRIVE FOR SENIORS

Aegis Gardens, the Coal Creek Family YMCA and the City of Newcastle are partnering to help citizens in need during this COVID-19 outbreak. We’re uniting to mobilize resources and support for our vulnerable residents.

Our first initiative, the Newcastle Cares Essentials Drive has been a HUGE success. We've collected hundreds of pounds of goods to donate to our senior community and held several distribution days where ALL of it was claimed.

We've found there is a need for this in the community, so we're expanding our donations drive. We'll now accept donations at anytime. If you would like to lend a hand, please consider donating the following items:

— Items Most Requested: Toilet Paper (wrapped), hand sanitizer, wipes, paper towels/napkins (wrapped), cleaning products, disposable face masks, gloves

—Other suggested Items: Canned soup (easy open), canned fruits, pasta, instant oatmeal, pasta sauce, canned vegetables/beans

If you'd prefer to donate funds, rather than items, please email christinac@newcastlewa.gov. Additionally, if you can't donate items during the weeklong timeframe, Aegis Gardens can accept donations at any time through the month.

Donation Drop-off Sites:

You may drop off donation items at any listed Newcastle collection sites anytime:

- Aegis Gardens Newcastle (13056 SE 76th St.)

- Newcastle City Hall Lobby (12835 Newcastle Way)

- Coal Creek Family YMCA (13750 Newcastle Golf Club Road) - Only on weekdays during regular business hours

Donation Distribution Day

All items will be collected and distributed to seniors in the Newcastle area on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Aegis Gardens' Stan Head Cultural Center (13056 SE 76th St.). We invite all Newcastle seniors and/or senior caregivers to stop by and pick up anything they might need. You do not need to get out of your car, we will bring them to you. If you are a senior who is unable to drive to the distribution day or you do not feel comfortable going out, please contact Aegis Garden's Alicia Campolito at Alicia.Campolito@aegisliving.com or call 206-819-7724 to discuss delivery options.

NEWCASTLE CARES AIMS TO HELP PEOPLE IN NEED DURING COVID-19 OUTBREAK

Aegis Gardens, the Coal Creek Family YMCA and the City of Newcastle are partnering to help citizens in need during this COVID-19 outbreak. We’re uniting to connect vulnerable Newcastle residents with resources and volunteers who want to help.

We are working together to assess the needs of vulnerable residents during this critical time. We’ll reach out to them, see how they’re doing, ask how we can help them, then mobilize support and resources. The YMCA is checking up on all of its senior members, while our partners at Aegis Gardens will focus on non-YMCA members of our community who reach out to them.

“During this critical time, it’s vital that we come together as a community to help our neighbors in need,” said Newcastle City Manager Rob Wyman. “We are so grateful for community partners like Aegis Gardens and the YMCA for stepping up to lend a hand.”

First, we need your help! If you are a senior, or know of a senior family member or neighbor in the Newcastle community, who might need help with tasks such as grocery shopping, meal delivery or any other type of assistance, please submit their name and contact information to Aegis Gardens’ Alicia Campolito (Alicia.Campolito@aegisliving.com) or Cindy Leung (Cindy.Leung@aegisliving.com). You can also call Aegis Gardens at 425-970-6708 and ask to speak with Alicia or Cindy. Aegis Gardens can assist seniors with things such as grocery runs, meal drops and connect them with resources like therapists and support groups.

Aegis Gardens is also offering Preparedness Kits to assist seniors and families with immediate care needs. The kit is a folder with an emergency contact form including all necessary forms of information in case there is a life change or an emergency. This can be handed to emergency personnel to contact your emergency contacts, family, insurance company and doctors. It allows you to have all of the forms ready in one place for easy access.

Additionally, the YMCA has set up a webpage that lists community resources for seniors, youth and families impacted by COVID-19: seattleymca.org/blog/resources-seniors-youth-and-families-impacted-covid-19. Resources include food support, health provider information, financial assistance programs and more.
