U.S. Representative Suzan DelBene, who has served Washington’s 1st District in Congress since 2012, posted a series of tweets on July 29, 2025 addressing immigration rights and expressing condolences following a mass shooting in Manhattan.

In two bilingual posts, DelBene informed her followers about their legal protections regarding detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In Spanish, she wrote on July 29: “ICE no puede detenerte sin causa justificada. Conoce tus derechos, mantente informado y protégete. Visita https://t.co/Rco0HWcsQT para obtener más información y recursos.” The same message was shared in English at the same time: “ICE can’t detain you without cause. Know your rights, stay informed, & protect yourself. Visit https://t.co/Rco0HWcsQT for more information & resources.”

Later that day, DelBene commented on recent violence in New York City: “Heartbroken by the mass shooting in Manhattan. No one should have to live in fear of gun violence. My thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, & the entire NYC community.”

Suzan DelBene succeeded Jay Inslee as representative of Washington’s 1st congressional district in 2012 and continues to serve in that capacity. She was born in Selma, Alabama in 1962 and currently resides in Medina. DelBene holds degrees from Reed College and the University of Washington.
