Suzan DelBene, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 1st district since 2012, has expressed her concerns and initiatives through recent social media posts. DelBene, who succeeded Jay Inslee in Congress, shared her views on several pressing issues.
On June 18, 2025, DelBene criticized the Trump administration for removing trained counselors from the suicide crisis line, a move she described as stripping “life-saving support from LGBTQ+ youth.” She emphasized that this decision is not merely a policy change but an act of cruelty due to the already higher risk of suicide faced by LGBTQ+ youth. “The Trump administration is deliberately stripping life-saving support from LGBTQ+ youth by removing trained counselors from the suicide crisis line. LGBTQ+ youth already face a higher risk of suicide. This isn’t policy—it’s cruelty.”
Later that day, DelBene shared her conversation with a veteran from Kirkland about the importance of Social Security. The veteran highlighted how these benefits helped his family while caring for his wife with multiple sclerosis (MS). DelBene stressed the necessity to protect such vital programs for current and future generations. “I sat down with a veteran from Kirkland to talk about how Social Security helped keep his family afloat while caring for his wife with MS. We must protect these vital programs for today’s families & future generations.”
In another post on June 18, 2025, DelBene addressed housing affordability issues. She announced her collaboration with Representative Jimmy Gomez to introduce legislation aimed at increasing affordable housing availability for families most in need. “Too many families are being priced out of their communities. That’s why I introduced legislation with @repjimmygomez to make affordable housing more available for families most in need.”
DelBene was born in Selma, Alabama in 1962 and currently resides in Medina. She holds degrees from Reed College and the University of Washington.
